The combination of her unusual, highly beguiling voice, some excellent songs and corking dance grooves make the recordings of Nella Dodds have charmed collectors of Northern Soul and girl groups for more than 35 years. Nella should, by rights, have had an album release in the mid-‘60s, when she was signed to New York’s Wand label via a production deal with Philadelphia’s Dyno-Dynamic Productions -essentially the precursor of what would eventually evolve into classic 1970s ‘Philly Sound’. She should also have had several major hits, rather than just the two fair to middling ones that she did have. But by the time that Philadelphia usurped Detroit as the epicentre of commercial Soul music, Nella Dodds had forsaken music for domesticity, destined to be regarded as another ‘great unknown’. Both sides of all six singles Dodds released on Wand between 1964 and 1965 are on this compilation, along with three outtakes from the same era, which have never been heard in public since the day they were recorded. Besides Nella, others who participated in these sessions include musicians who went on to form the core of MFSB, legendary Philly DJ/songwriter Jimmy Bishop (discoverer of and mentor to a host of other Philadelphia soul greats, most notably Barbara Mason) and Philadelphia International co-founder Kenneth Gamble, who wrote many of the songs. As well as Nella’s hit cover of the Supremes’ 'Come See About Me' (a song that made it up to number 74 in the charts) and its Top 100 follow-up 'Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers', this great collection features the Northern Soul favourites 'Come Back Baby', 'Honey Boy', 'First Date' and 'Maybe Baby'. It also includes what is probably the best cut on the set: Gamble’s moody ballad ‘You Don't Love Me Anymore’ which, sadly wasted on the B-side of ‘Come See About Me,’ sounds like a cross between Dionne Warwick and mid-'60s girl groups. The Rivingtons, whose pedigree stretches back into the doo-wop era, secured a place in music history when their first 45 was a US top 50 hit in the summer of 1962, and the insistently catchy lyrics of 'Papa Oom Mow Mow' turned every listener into a sing-a-long bass voice. The group went on to capture the dance-craze market with 1963 hit 'The Bird Is the Word', and those two songs were merged as a medley in `Surfin' Bird' by The Trashmen later that year to reach the US top 10, later being used as incidental music in the war movie 'Full Metal Jacket'.
The Rivingtons were, however, more than just a rock'n'roll novelty group, and at the dawn of the soul era recorded some superb ballads, of which 'I'm Losing My Grip' and 'Deep Water' have until now been hard-to-find gems.

Akron, Ohio group that started as The Harmonics before evolving into the Chicago Gangsters.

Piece Of Her Heart: Epic & Shout Years album by Erma Franklin was released Oct 20, 2009 on the Shout! label. When 'Piece of My Heart' reached the U.S. Top 20 in 1968, the Pop music world was largely unaware that Janis Joplin's gritty vocal was but an echo of the emotive original by Erma Franklin from the R&B Top 10 of a year earlier. Erma was the eldest sibling in the Franklin family, senior to Aretha and Carolyn, and like the former was signed to Columbia Records in the early 1960's, producing a number of high quality singles and an album on the Epic label. She then pacted with Shout Records in New York in 1967 to cut four singles of bluesy Soul gems, moving to Brunswick in 1969. This collection brings together, for the first time, a comprehensive collection of all tracks released on both the Epic and Shout labels, reflecting the full range of Erma's musical talent in this fine showcase of Soul and Blues repertoire, also blessed with a hint of Jazz styling.

Andrea True Connection's single release "More, More, More" was followed by putting together the album "More, More, More". A second album with the single release of "N.Y. You Got Me Dancing" followed. "What's Your Name, What's Your Number" was released next as a single. In 1980 Andrea True released her final album "War Machine" as a solo artist for the Italian Ricordi International label, performing rock and new wave.

Archie Bell formed the group while at high school and after their first local hit at Houston, "Tighten Up", Atlantic offered them a contract, in 1967.
Initially the line up consisted of James Wise , Willie Pernell, L.C. Watts, Cornelius Fuller.
In 1969 they started a succesful carrer at Philadelphia International Records.
After breaking up, Archie Bell released a solo album at Becket Records.
The group went on performing.
During the 1990s the line-up included Steve "Stevie G." Guettler (guitar, vocals), Jeff "JT" Strickler (bass guitar, vocals), Steve Farrell (guitar, vocals), Mike Wilson (keyboards, vocals) and Wes Armstrong (drums, vocals).

We continue our exploration of the fields of 1970s soul and disco. Today's LP is Nokuzola, released in 1979 on the Ziya Duma label and produced by the legendary West Nkosi. The album features 12 disco-soul-jive numbers by The Sherbone Stars and The Peddlars. While not much can be said about the seminal Peddlars that regular readers don't already know, you may be wondering who The Sherbone Stars are. The ladies - Joana Thango from Kwa Nongoma, Catherine Dumakude from White City Jabavu, Helen Mosolodi from Sibasa and Sandra Senne from Rustenburg - are the unknown voices you can hear harmonising on most of Mpharanyana's recordings made with The Peddlars between 1978 and 1979. The composer credits indicate the presence of session player Meshack Mkhwanazi and the LP itself includes some lead vocals from other freelancers including Albert Motha, Mahotella Queens vocalist Thandi Radebe and Jacob Khoza. Mpharanyana Radebe only appears on one number here - "Ngiyizwile Inyoni" - but there are Zulu language versions of songs from his album Morena Re Thuse Kaofela (Soul Jazz Pop BL 173). Both Meshack Mkhwanazi and The Sherbone Stars were shepherded by West on a variety of studio productions including the aforementioned Morena Re Thuse Kaofela, Patience Africa's hit albums Siyabonga (Soul Jazz Pop BL 175) and Let's Groove Tonight (Black Hi-Lights Records BL 245) and a number of recordings by Venda group Takalani Band, shared here on Afrosynth. Both Meshack and fellow musician Albert Motha were recruited by West into a new mbaqanga group later in 1979 - Amaswazi Emvelo.
